There are times when you feel at a loss of words. It’s like a terrible nightmare you had. You are gasping for air, struggling to breathe, battling with your own body to shout or at least let out a soft whimper so that you will be heard. It’s scary. It’s surreal.
On 26th November, 2008, at 9.40 pm Mumbaikars were jolted out of their normal life and pushed into a bizarre mayhem that seemed nightmarish. A nightmare that scarred not just the city but its resilience too. The city that never sleeps, now shall take some time to wake up from its horrendous reality. God knows how long.
26/11 shall go down in Indian history as a black day. A day that shook the country and told the countrymen that no place is safe enough. The images of those four never ending days shall haunt us for days to come and shall serve as reminders to the normlessness in the country.
All that happened on the fateful night seems like a war movie. A gory war film. Gunshots being heard in different wings of the Taj, explosions inside the Trident, people held hostages in Nariman house, people being evacuated, injuries, and bloodshed. Just that this was real. In a movie the number of injured and dead increase within a stipulated time of not more than three hours. Here, there were four long days, four never ending days that saw death and destruction at its gory worst.
It was all a blur till the NSG commandos reached Mumbai 10 hours later. It was then that Mumbai realized that it was raging a war against terror. Till then, it was a pandemonium. The Taj ablaze, with staff, guests and the terrorists inside, the trident where one could hear explosions at different places and Nariman house where innocent lives were trapped: images that can’t be erased from our memory for a long, long time. Live coverage showed us how people were being evacuated, how they moaned the loss of their loved ones who were shot at, mercilessly in front of their own eyes. We saw the majestic Taj go up in flames, we saw wing after wing being demolished, window after window looking like a burning inferno. We saw people hoping against hope for their friends and relatives fenced inside, to return to safety.
Statistics of over 170 dead and over 300 injured tell us how uncertain life in this nation has become. 170, 300: mere numbers. Each one of the 170 dead was an individual with a life of his own, dreams of his own, a family of his own.
Each of the brave men who died fighting for our safety were men of valour and zeal. Hemant Karkare, Ashok Kamte, Vijay Salaskar and Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan gave up their today for our tomorrow. They fought relentlessly giving up every other worry in their life, so that we did not have to give up our peaceful sleep worrying about our wellbeing.
Now that the operation is over and all but one terrorist wiped out, is it remotely sensible to call our country safe? Are we out of the perils of terrorism that are haunting the world? Is our democratic set up strong enough to stand up to terror? Why were the repeated warnings by the intelligence bureau ignored? Why did the government turn a blind eye to the notice sent by the fishing community regarding the freight of RDX? Is there any guarantee that attacks of these kinds won’t happen again? Can the Indian government come out of its petty crib sessions and face reality for once? Are we really shining and a growing power? Can the system do anything to curb the hindrances in the way of our progress?
These are just some of the long list of questions to which public angst demands answers.
The fire at the Taj and the Oberoi-Trident is put out completely. But the incident has ignited a fire in the public that shall blaze for some time. It will take more than hollow reassurances and monetary help to stifle that fire. The answers that we seek affect our lives and our lives are too precious to be lost because of our inept politicians.
I would say, we have been done in by incompetent politicians and not by terrorists. We are done in by the lack of order in the system and not by the well planned terrorists. We are done in by the sheer negligence of our politicians and not by the far sighted terrorists. We are done in by what the terrorists have and our leaders’ lack: the do or die attitude.
Shame on the government for not being able to protect its system. Shame on the government for killing our tried and tested spirit. Shame on the government for exploiting the nation’s fortitude. Shame on the government for everything that it does and everything it doesn’t.
It’s appalling to see our politicians trying to get political mileage out of this mishap. News reports tell us how banners have been put up in Mumbai, in the honour of the jawans who sacrificed themselves in this encounter, followed by the logo of a political party. Our honourable Ministers attend the funeral functions of these jawans not because of genuine concern but because ‘minister xyz’ of party’abc’ is present there. How can he not be there as well? This is not just inexplicably disgusting but a disgrace to the brave jawans too.
These are testing times for the nation and the whole world. The blame game shall never cease and it is not a solution. It would be clichéd to say that the nation must stand united and fight against terrorism. The natural question of ‘how’ arises again and ends up at the bungling politicians we have.
Its one of those times when you don’t know what’s leading to what and you feel like shouting from the rooftops at the top of your voice: “WHAT THE F?”
The question unanswered is whether anyone hears that or not. The ‘blind-eye-deaf-ear-syndrome’ is something our system has not grown out of.
So is the political bashing we see all around going to prove fruitful? Are the forced resignations by Shivraj Patil, RR Patil and Vilasrao Deshmukh going to take us any further? Can our leaders assure us of competent successors in their places? Or is it just another cover up for the unpardonable crimes by the government?
Only time can tell.
But let’s face it. Terrorism is a reality. Let’s come out of the illusion that it’s a delusion. We saw it and we are suffering. Lets not suffer anymore at the hands of these spineless ‘poli-ticks’. Let’s call a spade a spade and demand answers to our questions.
Let’s rubbish the theories our politicians make of the buoyant spirit we Indians possess. Let them know that we won’t endure anymore. Let’s demand security and peace. Let’s not be the silent sufferer’s of the ordeal.

Nice post. And there needs loads of change that has to take place, these shuffling of politicians are no answer in the long run but it is just another way to hush up we Indians. And its disheartening to see the blame-game and foul-politics being played by these political-zeroes in this so called democracy. We gravely need a solution, here again i am just hoping against hope that we will find one.
Jai Hind!
Felt like watching barka dutt live!
anger, frustration n helplessness...something which all the indains r facing now...is seen in ur post too...
the situation is atrocious, but will blaming alone do wonders...do we hav reasonable solutions? But one thing is sure, this is not gonna b forgotten...n lets hope everything comes back to normal as soon as possible,n effective measures r taken for the safety of our country..
A sincere n honest attempt n I loved it as always..!
The most saddening is the story of Sandeep Unnikrishnan whos profile is http://www.orkut.co.in/Main#Profile.aspx?uid=5185304287748406909
Another thing, where did raj thackeray and his mns men go when North Indian and and south Indian NSG commandos braved their lives for saving "maharashtra for maharashtrians", why did they not kick those guys out too?
@ my life is my lesson
thanks for posting your comment. Yes, we need a solution and this time let this not be 'a hope against hope'. Let's make sure we come up with one. Jai hind
@angel...
i think a lot of inspiration does come from Barkha dutt, hence the 'listening-to barkha-feel'...
@venkatesh
you are so right! one of the points i missed on my blog! Raj thackrey has probably gone into hiding...good for him, i wud say...stones were never soft afterall...
I just stumbled upon your blog!
Your views are pretty much the same that millions have already expressed. Words, words and more words! This will not help a bit unless we Indians develop a strong nationalistic view. Look at Pakistanis how they are ridiculing India even openly saying that we did it to ourselves! And we Indians are saying that Pakistanis may not be involved at all! We never learn........
BTW, Bark(ing)a dutt is a bad example to emulate or be inspired by! She is one virulently anti-india, pro-pakistani hag! If you want to know more about her, read the following article.

You know who the "woman reporter" here :-)
@ numero
I agree with what you said about developing a nationalistic view. But saying that Barkha Dutt is a bad example to be inspired by...well, friend, i dont agree with you. I did not read the article you mentioned there(i cudnt open the page)and anyways, the article is (must be)one particular persons view about it, which you cant blindly believe. Definitely, I wouldnt.
You are plainly wrong! Please do a bit of study on Barkha Dutt. Probably, you watch NDTV tooo much! Or inspired by Hindi movies some of which have portrayed Burqua Dutt as an intrepid reporter! Both are plainly wrong!
NDTV is run by commies/congressis. Also, have questionable sources of funding. They act as the mouth piece of a particular political party.
Perhaps, you are very young to realize this whole political game. The job of a journalist looks quite glamorous until you get mired in it yourself. It could perhaps even prove to be suffocating!
BTW, the article link I posted in my previous posting is from The Hindu. It is not an orinary person's view! But from the chief of Navy! Barkha has got blood on her hands of the soldiers. No wonder, Vir Sanghvi(of HT) is all riled up against the navy chief :-)After all Barkha is his blue eyed girl ;-)

your comments have particularly nothing to do with what i have posted on my blog. Yet, I published your second comment just to substantiate my appreciation and admiration for Barkha Dutt. since you provided me with a link that's by the navy chief, i feel obliged to provide you one too...an answer to all ur queries by barkha dutt herself...

do take a look......
I am very happy that you are encouraging discussion on the dismal and shameful role of indian media in the recently concluded anti-terror ops. You say that my postings are not directly related to your blog. To some extent, yes! But when I read your comments on Barkha, I somehow felt that you should also know the other face of Barkha.
Indian media and Indian journalists are biased is a well known fact. Your citing Barkha's own defense is not the right way to counter my point. A third party has to evaluate Barkha's and the Indian media's despicable role, in general, in the sensationalization of the terror reporting. Have you read articles from other esteemed journalists like Arun Shourie, Kanchan Gupta, et al, to know exactly how dangerous the reporting was to the lives of the security forces? The blabbering indian reporters were giving out all the details of the anti-terror op thus putting to risk the lives of the security forces! The govt even at one time thought of stopping the live reporting!
I live in USA. I was watching CNN for 2 consecutive days. Even though they were getting the live feed from IBN, the reporting was very balanced, cool headed and very professional. Not the excited, frothing-at-the-mouth kind of reporting by Indian journalists which makes me feel that there is a disconnect between their brains and their tongues! Did you notice Rajdeep Sardesai asking the british high-commissioner about the cancellation of cricket series? How low one can stoop?
Coming back to Barkha, you should always remember that she is a Jamia Milia alumni, which univ is funding the terror suspects' legal fees(rememebr Bathla house encounter?)! Her stint at Columbia univ was not self-earned but through her(her dad's?)connections as it was an exchange program. Yes she copies western journalism(but with lots of shouting!) and probably it looks appealing to many a young people in India. I wish I can tell you a lot about her and reporters of her ilk. We have many such in the west too like Christiann Amanpour, et al, that are fundamentally biased against India(and Hindus in particular). But I leave it to you to find it out yourself! But please don't become another Barkha! One is enough :-)
Anyway, thanks for publishing my comments! You are doing good :-) More than your blog, discussions like these you should permit that perhaps makes you know the other side of every issue. Am I right? :-)
Your friend........
Numero...
Our perspectives on Barkha are poles apart and I guess this is getting us nowhere...you wont listen to me, neither would I listen to you! ;)...but this discussion was interesting I should say...thanks for taking time to counter each of my replies...:)
thanks again :)
very well written...strong language..i totally agree with you..i just don't know what to say about the whole tragedy...it just killed me to learn that the sweet lil kid who turned two that day lost both its parents....and sadly, this not going to be the last incident rt??
i was upset as everyone else, and i chose not to read reports about it anymore, i know what everyone had to say, nothing would ever make any difference, but a friend of mine told being oblivious to everything is just not the right solution..
i lost count of people who blogged about the incident, and everyone was in his or her way deeply moved by it..
you've expressed it well...
"The fire at the Taj and the Oberoi-Trident is put out completely. But the incident has ignited a fire in the public that shall blaze for some time."
rightly said...
nice wrk.
Finally I am back..
Veena,
Dont shout at me for the late comment you know i was lazying around a lot :)..
.....
But back to post..a relavant topic..well written and surely one of those instances where you feel like taking the gun and shooting up all the guys who are behind this whole incident..some thing like a sunny deol movie.. :)..but seriously no one can be sunny deol who acts like that in his movies..
But what can we do??
Sit and see 24*7 what was going on and feeling bad on that..nope!!! that is not what we want to do..what we want to do should be so relevant that when a terrorist keeps bombs or comes over to take over places like what happened in mumbai..he should know that we are waiting for him and he would be fried like a pig in the furnace of hate and integrity and democracy..!!!
I wish we could move on and see how to solve the big question Terrorism!!!
good work da..!!! :)
:( salute to the ppl murdered.. i can see ur anger and sorrow.. whole india wer cryin.. me too.. nicely written!
black blood and mithu....
thanks ya...:)
once we could very proudly say"sare jaham se acha"
but now...well we should think twice before we say that.
btw,i should say you just improve day by day.im proud of you my dear!
remu....
